Interlock, Deck & Fence Maintenance Guide

Learn how to maintain your interlock patios, walkways, decks and fences year-round to keep them looking their best.

Interlock Maintenance

Interlock patios and walkways are designed to last decades, but proper maintenance helps preserve their appearance and structural integrity.

Routine maintenance includes:

• Sweep debris regularly to prevent buildup between joints
• Remove weeds or moss early before roots spread
• Rinse the surface periodically to remove dirt and organic material
• Inspect joint sand and re-sand if it begins to wash out
• Avoid using metal shovels or sharp tools on the surface

Maintaining the joint sand between pavers helps prevent movement and protects the base structure.

Winter Care

When removing snow from interlock surfaces, avoid using metal-edged shovels or ice choppers, as these can scratch the surface of the pavers and remove joint sand.

For best results, use:

• Plastic snow shovels
• Rubber-edged snow shovels
• Ice melt products safe for concrete or pavers

Removing snow early helps prevent ice buildup and reduces the need for aggressive scraping.

Power Washing Interlock

Power washing removes dirt, moss and organic buildup that can make patios and driveways look aged.

Recommended frequency:

• every 5-10 years for normal areas
• every 5 years in shaded areas

After washing, new polymeric sand should be installed to stabilize the joints.

When Is It Safe to Seal Interlock?

New interlock should not be sealed immediately.

Recommended waiting time:

6–12 months after installation

This allows:

• efflorescence to dissipate
• sand joints to settle
• the base to stabilize

Best time to seal:

• late spring
• summer
• early fall

Deck Maintenance

Wood decks require periodic care to prevent weather damage.

Recommended maintenance: clean annually, re-stain every 2–3 years,  inspect boards and fasteners.

This helps protect the wood from moisture and UV damage.

Composite Deck Maintenance

Composite decks require less maintenance but still benefit from occasional cleaning.

Recommended care:

• wash with mild soap and water
• rinse with low pressure
• avoid harsh chemicals

Cleaning once or twice per year keeps composite boards looking new.

Fence Maintenance

Wood fences should be cleaned and sealed periodically to protect against moisture and sun damage.

Recommended care:

• inspect posts annually
• remove mildew buildup
• stain or seal every 3–5 years

Vinyl and composite fencing generally only require occasional washing.
