The process

From the first site visit to the final walkthrough

No mystery, no handoffs, no wondering who's showing up. Here's exactly how a project runs — and who you're dealing with at every stage.

Six stages

How a project runs

The same sequence whether it's a driveway, a deck or a bathroom — scaled to the size of the job.

  1. Free site visit

We come out, measure the space, and look at the things that decide how the job has to be built — grade, drainage, soil, and whether a machine can get in. We talk through what you're picturing. No charge, no obligation.

  2. Written itemized quote

You get a detailed written quote broken into real line items — excavation, base, materials, borders, labour — not one vague number labelled "driveway". You can see what each part costs and decide what's worth it.

  3. Scheduling & permits

Once the quote is approved we lock in dates you can actually plan around. If the build needs a City of Kingston permit for its height, size or setback, we tell you — rather than hoping nobody asks.

  4. Site prep & base

Old surfaces come out and get hauled away. The area is excavated to the depth your soil actually needs and the granular base is built up and compacted in lifts. This is the invisible stage that decides whether the job still looks right in ten years.

  5. The build

Pavers, decking, tile or trim goes in — with the owner on site, not a rotating crew. The work area gets tidied at the end of each day, because it's your home and you still have to live there.

  6. Walkthrough & cleanup

We walk the finished project with you and sort out anything that isn't right. Debris and excavated material are hauled away, and the final look happens on a clean site.

What doesn't change

One accountable person, start to finish

The reason the process is this straightforward is that there's no chain of command in it. The person who quotes your project is the person who builds it. There's no salesperson who disappears after you sign and no subcontracted crew who've never spoken to you.

That matters most when something unexpected turns up — poor drainage under an old driveway, an unstable sub-base, an out-of-level subfloor behind a bathroom wall. You get told what was found, what the options are and what the extra work costs, before anything happens. Not a surprise line on a final invoice.

Common questions

What people ask before booking

Who will actually be working on my property?
The owner. Gonzo Construction is owner-operated, so the person who walks your property on the first visit is the same person planning the build, managing the schedule and on site while it goes in. You're not handed off to a different crew after you sign.
How far ahead do I need to book?
Interlock and deck work are weather-dependent and the season fills from spring onward, so the earlier you reach out the more flexibility you have on timing. Interior renovations can be scheduled through the winter.
Will you tell me if I need a permit?
Yes. Depending on height, size and setback, decks may require a City of Kingston building permit, and fences have their own by-law limits. We build to code and tell you when a permit is needed. Always confirm current requirements with the City for your specific project.
What happens if you find a problem once work starts?
We tell you before we do anything about it. Older properties sometimes reveal poor drainage, an unstable sub-base or, indoors, an out-of-level subfloor or previous water damage. We show you what we found, explain the options and price the extra work before proceeding.
Do you clean up after the job?
Yes. The work area is kept tidy day to day, and at the end of the project all debris and excavated material is hauled away. The final walkthrough happens on a clean site.
Are you insured?
Yes — Gonzo Construction is fully insured and incorporated, operating as 1001500073 Ontario INC. You're dealing with a registered, accountable business.
