Decks & fences FAQ

Questions we hear about decks & fences

Composite or cedar — which decking should I choose?
Both are great; it comes down to how you want to spend your time and money. Cedar is warm, natural and lower up-front cost, but wants staining and upkeep every few years. Composite costs more at install but shrugs off Ontario winters with almost no maintenance and won't splinter or rot. We'll walk you through the trade-offs for your budget and how you actually use the space.
Do I need a permit for a deck or fence in Kingston?
It depends on height, size and how close to the property line you're building — many decks over a certain height and area do require a City of Kingston building permit, and fences have their own by-law limits. We build to code and will tell you honestly when a permit is needed and what it involves before any work starts. Always confirm the current requirements with the City for your specific project.
Will my deck footings survive frost heave?
Yes — we set footings below the frost line on a proper base so the structure doesn't lift and shift when the ground freezes and thaws. Cutting corners on footings is the number-one reason older decks end up racked and wobbly; we don't.
What fencing materials do you install?
Pressure-treated wood, low-maintenance vinyl, and powder-coated aluminum for railings and modern privacy screens. Aluminum comes in black, white or beige. We'll match the fence to your home, your privacy needs and the look you're after.
Can you add a pergola, lighting or a pool deck?
Absolutely — pergolas, integrated railing and step lighting, and pool-surround decks are some of our favourite builds. It's all part of turning a plain backyard into an outdoor living space you'll actually use.
Which areas around Kingston do you build decks and fences in?
We work across Kingston and the surrounding communities — Amherstview, Bath, Odessa, Napanee, Gananoque, Sydenham, Verona, Harrowsmith, Inverary, Battersea and Wolfe Island. Reach out if you're within about a 45-minute radius.
